Today I learned on the Food Network that Chinese take-out containers were originally oyster pails. Oysters were cheaper and more plentiful than they are today, so people would buy them and take them home in those little white containers. When oysters were overharvested and got more expensive, oyster pails were re-marketed as containers for Chinese food. Yum.
